The last ball he had played from Lakshmipati Balaji was in the previous match which was a pitched up delivery on leg side which Afridi had top edged while trying to flick the ball towards the square leg. Balaji runs in and it’s a pitched up delivery on the leg stump again, it was like watching the replay from last match. But the only difference, Afridi times the ball to perfection and the ball leaves his bat making the sweet sound of willow and lands next to the fan who had his arms full stretched out and started jumping with joy, they were all jumping, fans in Green and Blue. Even team India admired Afridi’s shot selection when he played a cover drive off Zaheer Khan and the ball bisected the two fielders standing inside the ring and blazed away to hit the boundary line.
Afridi’s batting technique was so ahead of it’s time that it took 18 years for Corey Anderson to break his fastest ODI hundred record of 101 in 37 balls in 1996. Afridi in 1996 had developed a technique to craft a shot outside of batting manual to score a SIX of perfect textbook deliveries. A technique which is more common in the modern day T20 batsmen. Afridi redefined the role of a Top order batsman by his inventing flat SIXES and batting in his own league where his name appears 3 times in the list of Top 10 fastest hundreds and whooping 6 times in the list of Top 20 fastest Fifties, and by hitting a career best of 351 SIXES which is second to none.
