Dwayne Bravo ruled out of IPL 2017
Gujarat Lions was dealt another blow when all-rounder Dwayne Bravo was ruled out of the IPL.
The news was confirmed by Gujarat Lions skipper Suresh Raina during the toss before their clash against Kings XI Punjab.
“Yes, Dwayne Bravo has been ruled out of the tournament. He had been doing all the rehab but just couldn’t take the heat. Would need another few weeks to get ready. We need to have a chat with the management and see who could be the replacement,” Raina said during the toss.
Captain Suresh Raina had confirmed it at the toss and coach Brad Hodge lamented on what Bravo’s absence meant for the team.
“We gave Bravo every opportunity to be fit. Unfortunately, he just ran out of time. When you take someone like him out of the side, especially after the way he performed last year, was always going to hurt us,” Hodge said.
“But that’s the way sport is. We will try and fill the void with [James] Faulkner and [Andrew] Tye, and they’re pretty good players as well.”
Bravo joined the Lions squad despite having not recovered from a hamstring injury he suffered during the Big Bash League earlier in the year. He tried his best to be match-fit for the second half, but the side decided to release him once it was confirmed that the West Indian will not be able to take the field in the next three weeks.
Expressing his disappointment on missing out the entire edition of the cash-rich league, Bravo, who picked up 17 wickets in 15 matches in the last season for Lions, said he will try to take the field in the second half of the tournament.
“It is with deep regret that I announce my decision to withdraw from the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League, owing to my hamstring injury. I have been with the Gujarat Lions squad since the beginning of their IPL 2017 campaign, undergoing my rehab on the sidelines, in the hope of returning to the cricket field in the second half of the tournament,” Bravo said in a statement.
“Unfortunately, I am simply not able to perform at my best which is what my team, fellow cricketers and fans deserve. I sincerely apologise to my Gujarat Lions teammates, franchise owners and all my wonderful fans all over the world for this disappointment. I, too, am deeply saddened and disappointed, particularly because I know how much my fans were looking forward to my return,” he added. Bravo also said his decision will help in improve his game in the future. “This is one of the hardest decisions I have had to make in my career but I do believe withdrawal from this season of the IPL will allow me to perform at my best later on in the year. Many people played a part in the road to recovery and I sincerely thank the owners, management and medical staff of the Gujarat Lions for their unwavering support and commitment. “I wish the Gujarat Lions team all the very best for the remainder of the campaign. I thank everyone for the love and encouragement and look forward to returning to the pitch,” Bravo said.
