First Test at Sabina Park Hangs in Balance due to late strikes from Shannon Gabriel
Younis Khan reached 10,000 runs in Test runs as he put on 131 runs with Babar Azam to put Pakistan in a good position.
West Indies dismissed Younis Khan and Babar Azam in the last session of Day 3 to see the visitors reach 201 for 4 at the end of day’s play at Sabina Park. Babar Azam top-scored for Pakistan with 72 runs while Younis also produced a gritty half century as the duo put on 131 runs between them to put their side in a good position. Misbah-ul-Haq and Asad Shafiq are still at the crease as Shannon Gabriel provided key breakthroughs to keep West Indies in the contest as visitors are still 85 runs behind West Indies first innings tally of 286 runs.
Younis reached a big milestone of 10,000 Test runs in the last session as he swept a delivery from leg spinner Devendra Bishoo to fine-leg fielder. Babar also notched up his half century to see Pakistan in the box seat in the game. Younis and Babar played cautiously at the start and took a lot of time consuming deliveries to soak up all the pressure put up by West Indies bowling. Jason Holder did see fortunes change as he gave Shannon Gabriel old ball in the last session as right-arm pacer produced twin strikes to leave the game even keel at the end of Day 3.
Earlier in the day, West Indies resumed their innings at 278 for 9 with Jason Holder at the crease. The hosts could only add 8 runs to their overnight score as Muhammad Aamir dislodged Shannon Gabriel’s stumps to claim his sixth wicket of the innings and end up with figures of 6 for 44 at Sabina Park. Pakistan started their first innings well but Azhar and Shahzad got starts and were dismissed as Pakistan were reduced to 54 for 2 before Younis and Babar produced a great partnership to see Pakistan end the day with good numbers.
West Indies will be hoping to dismiss Misbah and Shafiq quickly to keep Pakistan score less than 350 runs while Pakistan will be hoping to put 400 runs on the board as pitch will not be easy to bat the second time around at Sabina Park.
