Hashim Amla guide Kings XI Punjab to win vs Gujarat Lions
Punjab climb up to the fourth position with six points.
Batting first, KXIP scored 188–7 thanks to a classy 65 from Hashim Amla. In reply, Gujarat only managed 162–7 — handing KXIP a 26-run victory.
As Raina said in the post-match conference: “You can’t chase 190 every time. Bowlers have to do something.”
Earlier in the day, riding over half-century from Hashim Amla and a quick-fire 34 from Axar Patel, Punjab scored 188/7 against Gujarat.
Amla shared a 70-run stand for the second wicket with Shaun Marsh (30 off 24 balls). Even though KXIP were batting first in the contest, the urgency with which Maxwell batted in his innings made it look like as if his side was chasing a huge target.
Gujarat, who came from a win against Kolkata Knight Riders, elected to chase against Punjab. But their decision didn’t transpire as their skipper Suresh Raina had expected. Gujarat were let down by their spinners and top order batsmen who failed to give their side the much-needed start. To their credit, Gujarat Lions did well to grab a couple of wickets in the middle overs to dent KXIP’s hopes of a total in excess of 200 but Axar Patel came back to produce the goods. Akshar chipped in with a 17-ball 34 to push KXIP towards a big total.
Karthik, with the dismissal of Vohra, became the first wicketkeeper in the history of IPL to complete 100 dismissals. The 31-year-old cricketer, who has played for Delhi Daredevils (DD), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI) as well as Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) apart from Gujarat Lions, has 74 catches and 26 stumpings to his credit in IPL history.
Chasing a daunting total of 189, Gujarat managed to score 162/7 in the 20 overs in their own backyard at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here. In reply, Gujarat Lions saw runs from Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik but none of the others pitched in in chase of 189 runs. However, after Raina’s departure, the Gujarat middle-order kept giving away their wickets, leaving Dinesh Karthik with no one to assist him.
Karthik found some assistance from Andrew Tye who hit some big shots before being dismissed for 21. GL eventually fell short by 26 runs as Dinesh Karthik ended his innings on 58 from 44 deliveries.
Kings XI Punjab came back to winning ways by defeating the Gujarat Lions by 26 runs at Rajkot to move up to fourth place in the standings, pushing the Lions to the bottom.
Hashim Amla was adjudged the Man of the Match for his knock of 65 as Kings XI Punjab keep their play-off hopes while Gujarat Lions are only three losses away from elimination.
