Sri Lanka clinch historic series win over Pakistan in UAE

Dinesh Chandimal’s side stunned Pakistan to clinch the final day night-game by 68 runs.

Pakistan reached their low point this year as Sri Lanka clinched the two-match test series at Dubai. The hosts needed 119 runs to win the game but off-spinner Dilruwan Perera produced a splendid performance to see visitors win the game by 68 runs. The Islanders also became the first visiting team to win a series in UAE. Sarfaraz and co. will not be disappointed as they did play well in the series.

Sri Lanka have climbed to sixth place in the ICC Test rankings while Pakistan are now seventh in the table after getting whitewashed in the two-match series. Pakistan resumed their inning at 198 for 5 with Asad Shafiq and Sarfaraz Ahmed producing an unbeaten 146-run partnership. Shafiq played well after failing to make an impact in the first game.

Captain Sarfraz Ahmed look pro-active at the crease and did not allow bowlers to settle into a good rhythm. But the turning point in the game came when Sarfraz swept a delivery only to get a top-edge as Sri Lanka ended the dangerous partnership.

Shafiq did manage to get to his century but the wickets fell at the other end as Mohammad Amir, Yasir Shah and Mohammad Abbas looked out of sorts against Sri Lankan spinners on a weary surface. Rangana Herath also picked up wickets at the end to see Pakistan get bundled out for 268 runs.

Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first as Dimuth Karunaratne batted brilliantly to see the side post 482 runs. In reply, Pakistan batting did not produce anything as hosts folded for 262 runs. Sarfaraz and co. did manage to put a stellar show with the bat to see Sri Lanka get dismissed for just 96 runs in their innings.

Pakistan were reeling with the bat in the second inning s as well before Shafiq and Sarfaraz produced dogged resistance to keep the side in contention to win the game. In the end, it proved to be too much as Sri Lanka completed a historic series win over Pakistan.

Dimuth Karunaratne was named man of the series for his splendid performances against Pakistan.
